MAHOGANY URBAN POETRY SERIES WELCOMES SUGAR WATER PURPLE ON MAY 9TH!!

PLEASE MAKE YOUR WAY OUT TO SUPPORT THIS SHOW....SPECIAL $7 ADMISSION FOR THIS NIGHT ONLY!!
Sugar Water Purple began in the spring of 2009 as a jazz fusion ensemble under the vision of composer Joshua Washinton. With inspiration derived from such artists as Chick Corea, Hiromi Uehara, and Miles Davis, SWP quickly honed their skills as a band rooted in improvisation.  After several successful performances at both private events and popular public venues, the band took a new form when joined by soul songstress Jasmine Jordan.

What started as jazz fusion quickly morphed into funky neo soul as Sugar Water Purple began to build a steady following of loyal fans.  In the fall of 2010 they successfully self released their first EP, cementing their place as the California central valley's premier soul outfit.  In addition, they began their run as the house band for the Pierced Ear Poetry Slam, collaborating every month with both locally and nationally recognized spoken word artists.

2011 proved itself to be another successful year for the band.  That summer they returned to the studio to record their eponymous full length album.  SWP's sound had evolved with their inspiration, which now included artists such as RH Factor, Ledisi, Alicia Keys, and Stevie Wonder.  The success of the album was entirely fueled by the band's fans, who sponsored the entire cost of studio time though preorders.  Just days before the albums release Sugar Water Purple had the distinct pleasure of performing at TEDx San Joaquin, where they debuted their newest single entitled Bring Change.

Now, in 2012, the band has taken their biggest steps yet.  Not only did they leave the 1800+ crowd with a standing ovation when opening for the Grammy Award winning artist India.Arie, but they also have received tremendous praise for their inspiring recording of Bring Change, which was released as a free download in conjunction with the concert.  As they move forward, they can only hope that the opportunities that arise continue in the same way that they have been blessed with thus far.
